Maria Somerville – Spring

Maria Somerville surfaces with “Spring,” a late bloom from her new 4AD debut Luster, now finally out. Written after returning to her childhood home in Connemara, “Spring” carries the feeling of trying to piece together a half-forgotten dream — all foggy guitar strums, ghostly sirens, and a rhythm section that somehow walks and floats at the same time.

The production remains sparse, allowing the sounds to seep through the cracks rather than pile on top of each other. Distorted acoustic notes blur into breezy vocals, while a sly autotuned outro gives the track just enough of a nudge to break its spell.

Lyrically, “Spring” hints at growth but keeps its distance, more cautious thaw than full-on rebirth. It’s part of the bigger, mist-covered world Somerville sketches across Luster — a collection of songs that feel both close and untouchably distant, stitched together with memory, landscape, and the occasional existential side-eye.

Luster doesn’t announce itself; it wanders in, muttering secrets under its breath. “Spring” is just another reason to lean in and listen a little closer.
